Following on from my posts on gender and feminism (sorry i didnt realise how long that last one was!) I want to look at the work of Cindy Sherman, as her work addresses the issues I’ve talked about and in my opinion is one of the best feminist photographers. These images are from her 1977 series called untitled film stills, a collection of posed self portraits depicting the roles of women as stereotyped in films and the mass media such as the immature school girl (above) and perfect house wife (below). These self portraits don’t show herself, raather she is trying to encourage the viewer to recognise something of themselves in her images and she aims to encourage self reflection through her work. I really like these images, they have a balance of humour and theory that really puts her point across.
